How to Make DIY Sponge Cake Slices
Supplies you’ll need:
- Sponges
- Felt
- Mini pompoms
- Hot glue
- Scissors
- Marker
- Ruler
Step 1: Prepare the Sponges
If your sponges come with a green scrubby layer, peel it off. Some come with pink or yellow scrub layers, if you like, you can leave those on.

Step 2: Cut the Sponges
Using your ruler and marker, measure and mark the sponges to create the slices of cake. Start from a corner, marking towards the center of the opposite edge.

Use your scissors to carefully cut along the marked lines. You will have three triangles: one larger and two smaller ones. Glue the two smaller pieces together to form a triangle of the same dimensions as the first.

Step 3: Make Felt Frosting Layer
Cut a piece of yellow felt to create a middle layer of frosting. Cut a triangle a little bit larger than the sponge triangles.

Cut and glue on top of the combined triangle. Glue the overlap to the sides.

Glue the second sponge triangle on top of the felt frosting layer.

Step 4: Felt Frosting Outer Layer
To add frosting to the outside of the cake slice, place your sponge cake on your felt and trace around the base. Flip the cake up and trace the back side. You will have a piece of felt that fits around the back and top. Glue it on.

Step 5: Make Felt Frosting Roll
Cut a small strip of felt, about one inch wide and as long as the back of your cake. Fold in half lengthwise and glue together. Glue this frosting roll at the top back of your cake.

Step 6: Add Pom Pom Decorations
Finish your sponge cake by glueing on a few mini pom poms on top.
Once the glue is dry, your DIY pretend play food sponge cake is ready for playtime!
