I’m a big fan of the iconic polka dots by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. So when I found this bisque hedgehog planter at the thrift store, I knew what it needed: Color and lots of polka dots!
And you can do it too! With planters, or maybe you have a figurine that can use a makeover.
In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to transform a plain planter or figurine into a whimsical masterpiece Add a pop of color to your space with this fun and easy DIY project!
How to Makeover a Thrift Store Planter Figurine
Supplies you’ll need:
- Planter or figurine from a thrift store
- Primer
- Acrylic paint in various colors
- Varnish or sealant
- Paintbrushes in different sizes
- Dotting tools or Q-tips for creating dots
Step 1: Paint the Base Color
Apply a coat of primer and allow it to dry completely. Primer will help the paint stick better and provide a smooth base for your design.
Choose a base color for your planter or figurine and apply it evenly. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second coat if needed.
Step 3: Create Polka Dots
Once the base color is dry, you’re ready to add the iconic polka dots inspired by Yayoi Kusama’s artwork.
Using a contrasting color of acrylic paint and a dotting tool, start adding polka dots. You can use different sizes of dots and vary their placement to achieve the look you like.
If you don’t have dotting tools, you can use Q-tips to make your dots. Adjust your pressure to vary the dot sizes.
Step 5: Seal the Design
To protect your work, apply a coat of varnish or sealant over your planter or figurine. Once the varnish is dry, your Yayoi Kusama-inspired plater is ready for a plant!
