This is a macrame plant hanger anyone can make. Don’t let the thought of difficult macrame knots scare you from trying. This plant hanger uses only a basic knot. Nothing fancy, if you can tie a secure knot, you can make this plant hanger.
I’ll show you how I make mine, step-by-step with pictures so you can follow along!
How to make a Macrame Plant Hanger
Supplies you’ll need:
- A hanging plant (the one in the pictures is a fishbone cactus but you can make this for any plant that hangs and trails down.)
- Plant pot
- Tape measure
- Strong yarn or cord, like macrame cord, or fabric yarn.
- 6 Wooden macrame beads
- Scissors
- Tape
Step 1. Preparation
Cut three lengths of yarn, about 75″ long. Lay them out together and fold in half.
Use a piece of tape at the halfway point to secure your strands to the table.
Tie a regular (overhand) knot with both sets of strands to create a 2″ loop at the top.
Step 2. First Row of Beads And Knots
Separate the strings into three sets of two. String a bead on each pair of strings. Secure with a knot located at about 8″ from the top knot.
Bead Tip: To get the yarn through your bead, take a piece of thin wire, fold it to form a small loop. Push it through the bead. Catch the cord or yarn in the loop, and pull it right through the bead. A crochet hook that fits through the bead can be helpful too.
Step 3. The Cross Over
Next, we create the middle cross-over pattern between the beads. You will start and end with three pairs of two strands.
- Take one strand from the left pair and bring it to the middle.
- Take both strings from the middle pair and separate them, one left and one right.
- Finally, take one strand from the right pair and bring it to the middle.
Step 4. The Lower Beads
String a bead on each pair of strings. Tie a knot under the beads at about 7″ from the previous beads.
Step 5. The Final Knot
You’re almost finished. About 10″ below the bottom row of beads, tie one secure overhand knot with all of the strings. Pull tight.
Remove the tape from the plant hanger and trim the bottom fringe.
Step 6. Insert Plant and Hang.
Safety first: Make sure that the hook you use to hang your planter sits secure and is strong enough to hold the weight of the plant.
When you insert your plant, carefully sort the leaves leaves between the strings. You want them nicely balanced and not getting crushed. Move the lower beads up or down as you please.
